Taylor Small to Seek Candidacy for Vermont House of Representatives

WINOOSKI, VT -

Taylor Small announced today that she is seeking the Democratic nomination and Progressive endorsement for the Chittenden 6-7 district state representative seat, representing Winooski and a portion of Burlington.

Small announces her candidacy in the wake of Representative Diana González’s recent announcement that she will not be seeking re-election. González will serve as Small’s campaign treasurer and has endorsed her for the position.

“Taylor uses her experience to joyfully connect with and advocate for others,” said González. “In this time where it is especially indisputable that housing is a public health issue, Taylor will bring her skills and passion to fight for safe and secure housing for all Vermonters. I am certain she will be an excellent representative for Winooski and Burlington in the statehouse.”

Small currently serves as the Director of the Health & Wellness program at Pride Center of Vermont, a statewide non-profit organization serving the needs of LGBTQ+ Vermonters. She previously held positions in mental health services at Howard Center and Northwestern Counseling and Support Services and supported homeless and runaway youth at Spectrum Youth and Family Services. She is a former Board Member for Outright Vermont, a statewide non-profit that works to build safe, healthy, and supportive environments for LGBTQ+ youth and their families.

“Vermont holds a special place in my heart. This state has provided me the opportunity to explore who I am and the privilege to share my authentic self with others,” said Small. “It takes tough conversations, strong advocacy, a bit of humor, and the drive to persist to make change happen. I want to continue to make our brave little state a better place for all Vermonters with my run for the state legislature.”

Small, a transgender woman and first-generation United States citizen, has also received the endorsement of Dr. Jean Szilva.

“Every crisis magnifies systemic flaws. We need new voices to find new solutions,” said Szilva. “Taylor brings a wealth of skills and knowledge, especially in healthcare advocacy. I endorse her wholeheartedly.”

High on Small’s list of key priorities are healthcare, a livable minimum wage, access to fair housing, and growing the state’s arts economy.

“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Taylor and she recognizes the importance of a strong arts economy for fostering a rich and vibrant cultural downtown,” said Ali Nagle, co-owner of Waking Windows festival and manager of The Monkey House.

Small will launch her campaign by joining Chittenden County Senate candidate, Kesha Ram, for the Queens in Quarantine event on Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at 7:30 PM. The discussion and virtual party will focus around LGBTQ+ needs during COVID-19 and include music from DJ Craig Mitchell and appearances by local drag queens Emoji Nightmare and Shani.
