Taylor Small has won her race for the Chittenden 6-7 House seat over opponent Jordan Matte, taking another step toward becoming Vermont’s first openly transgender state rep.

According to a receipt read directly from the Winooski city clerk only a few minutes after the Winooski polling location closed, Small claimed 928 votes over Matte’s 291. Incumbent Hal Colston also received 871 votes. (The Chittenden 6-7 district covers the city of Winooski and a small part of Burlington. The Burlington votes have not yet been reported.)

There are no Republican competitors up against Colston and Small for the general election.

Small read the results to her group of supporters over the phone (only one person was allowed to view the receipt inside the Winooski polling location) as the others stood outside. Screams erupted when the others heard Small had won and brought in more votes than the incumbent.

Small said it felt “amazing” to reach this victory.

“I’m really glad that all of the work we put into this campaign and connecting to this community has really paid off,” she said. “It just feels like a testament to what Vermont is looking for and what Winooski is looking for in their leadership.”
